Johannesburg - The National Union of Metalworkers of SA on Monday conveyed condolences to the family of former president Thabo Mbeki following the death of his mother Epainette Mbeki.

“The 348 375 strong metalworker (sic) salute Mme Mbeki and her generation for their courageous role in the liberation struggle and fight for emancipation of women,” Numsa spokesperson Castro Ngobese said in a statement.

Mbeki died in the Life St Dominic's Hospital in East London, Eastern Cape, aged 98 on Saturday morning.

She had suffered from a heart problem and chest infection and had been in hospital since May 25.

She was the wife of the late African National Congress and SA Communist Party stalwart Govan Mbeki.

Ngobese described her as a “principled cadre, revolutionary communist, and community activist whose tongue was as sharp as her agile mind”.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said on Monday she would get a special official funeral at the family home in Ngcingwane, Dutywa, Eastern Cape, on Saturday.
