Sport and economic development have been identified as key areas for possible co-operation and mutual benefit between the North West province and the Ivory Coast, the North West provincial government said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Lesiba Moses Kgwele said representatives of the provincial government and Ivory Coast agreed in a bilateral meeting held on the sideline of the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) at Sun City outside Rustenburg on Tuesday.

He said the meeting also identified the development of a home industry for unemployed women from rural communities as an intervention that could boost job creation.

“Our women are conversant on politics but need to be capacitated on economic issues,” said premier Thandi Modise.

Ivory Coast sports minister Alain Michel Lobognon said his country was aware the North West province was a rich province with huge potential.

He expressed confidence that after the Afcon tournament, the women projects would be revived between Ivory Coast and the North West province and exchanges explored further.

He said African countries need to work together to make a powerful continent and that all countries must work to promote peace. - Sapa
