The affordable education loan option
Cape Town - More than 14 000 teachers left the employ of the department of basic education in the 2012/13 financial year, Minister Angie Motshekga said in a parliamentary reply.
“The reasons (for leaving the department) include death, ill-health and retirement,” she said in reply to a question from the Congress of the People.
The total number for the year was 14 302, down from 14 988 in 2011/12. The lowest figure in the past five financial years was 11 903 teachers in 2008/08.
In the 2012/13 financial year, 6 272 qualified teachers resigned, 1 859 died, 394 left because of ill health, 5 417 retired, and 360 were dismissed.
