Johannesburg - Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor on Monday issued the first birth certificates containing all vital details of a new-born baby.

Spokesman Lunga Ngqengelele said Pandor handed the first unabridged certificates to two couples at the Netcare Park Lane Hospital in Johannesburg.

He said parents would now be issued with one birth certificate, instead of two as in the past.

“The unabridged birth certificate will be more secure and reliable and will contain, apart from information of the newborn babies, details of both parents, including their ID numbers,” Ngqengelele said.

The new certificates would not only save time but would help the department move towards being paperless. - Sapa
