Cape Town - Wednesday's municipal elections and the results “is testament to the maturity of South Africa's constitutional democracy”, says Parliament's home affairs portfolio committee.

In a statement on Sunday, the committee welcomed the announcement of the 2016 municipal elections results by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

“In our view, the completion of the electoral process is testament to the maturity of South Africa's constitutional democracy,” committee chairman Lemias Mashile said.

The committee was also satisfied with the prompt manner in which the IEC resolved disputes.

“This has strengthened the confidence that we had in the ability of the commission to deliver a credible, free, and fair election,” he said.

The committee would in the coming months engage the commission to assess all the processes undertaken, problems faced, and areas needing improvement to enhance the electoral processes.

“The committee congratulates all stakeholders that participated in making the elections successful.”
