Durban - An eThekwini municipality Councillor has laid criminal charges of crimen injuria against former estate agent Penny Sparrow.

ANC Councillor Brandon Pillay of Ward 69 and his entourage, made their way to the Chatsworth Police Station to lay charges of crimen injuria against Sparrow who posted a racist message about black South Africans on Facebook.

Sparrow had taken to Facebook to express her feelings about how packed Durban beaches were on New Year’s Eve and January 1.

However, Sparrow had referred to black people as "monkeys" and that they "bring huge dirt and troubles and discomfort to others".

Sparrow has since gone into hiding and sought the assistance of the Police because she fears for her safety.

Pillay took several minutes to compile and sign the statement accompanying his charge against Sparrow.

According to the SAPS website, crimen injuria "consist of unlawfully and intentionally impairing the dignity or privacy of another person."

Pillay said, he will take the matter further to the South African Human Rights Commission.

"We are not prepared to let racists get away with making these statements. We cannot tolerate racists and their racist attitudes," said Pillay.
