Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal announced on Friday its decision to end Penny Sparrow’s membership as a result of her recent racist rantings on social media.

“There is no place for racists in the Democratic Alliance, and as such Penny Sparrow is no longer associated with the DA in any way,” said DA KZN leader Zwakele Mncwango.

“Sparrow is entirely disassociated from the DA, and has no ties with the party.”

This comes after Sparrow set social media ablaze on Sunday after having referred to black South Africans on a Durban beach as “monkeys”. Sparrow attempted to apologise saying she did not view it offensive as she thought monkeys were cute.

Mncwango said that the DA would “always deal decisively with racists”. However, the party has recently come under fire, particularly from the African National Congress (ANC) for its alleged hyprocrisy.

According to the ANC, the DA was selective in disciplining members, this after MP Dianne Kohler Barnard was permitted to retain her position despite sharing a post on Facebook which praised former apartheid President PW Botha.
