Pretoria - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters is meeting with her Lesotho counterpart Lebesa Maloi in Maseru on Thursday in an effort to resolve problems on taxi operations between the two neighbouring countries.
Conflicts between South African and Lesotho taxi operators have been raging on for some time.
Matters came to a head two weeks ago when Basotho operators parked their taxis on the busy Maseru Bridge border post for almost three days.
They claimed to have been fighting back after their taxis were attacked and passengers injured, allegedly by South African operators.
There was no movement of people and goods during that time, including school children and workers.
The operators decided to hold fire after the ministers of both countries decided to intervene.
A joint discussion was held between transport agencies of both countries, with no resolutions found, confirming a need for high-level intervention for both countries to find an amicable solution.
A working group was then established to deal with existing problems and deployment of an interim operational model to secure the safe and free flow of passengers and goods across the border. Despite this effort the impasse remains.
