Cape Town - The ringleaders of the so-called “poo protests” in Cape Town will appeal sanctions imposed on them by the ANC, they said on Tuesday.
ANC councillor Loyiso Nkohla was expelled from the party following his involvement in last year's dumping of human faeces during protests in the city.
Nkohla and former City of Cape Town councillor Andile Lili were charged with, among others, bringing the African National Congress into disrepute.
Lili was given a suspended three-year sentence, disqualifying him from participating in ANC activities for one year.
They led protesters in dumping faeces on, among others, the steps of the Western Cape legislature and at Cape Town International Airport last year.
Lili said the group would approach the national structures of the ruling ANC to launch an appeal, as they did not trust the provincial and regional leadership of the party.
“These people are colluding with the DA... the regional leadership; we've seen them kissing Helen Zille during the march of the ANC, hugging Helen Zille in front of the masses, showing they are living with Zille in Constantia,” Lili said.
The two men claimed the provincial and regional leadership were getting rid of anyone who could challenge them at the ANC's provincial conference this year.
Nkohla was expelled from the party as he was still serving a three-year suspension for his involvement in disrupting an ANC event where President Jacob Zuma was speaking in the city.
Dullah Omar regional committee chairman Faizel Moosa said on Monday: “After his previous suspension, he failed to rehabilitate himself.”
In terms of the ANC constitution, the men have 21 days to lodge appeals against the judgment.
Lili was given his marching orders by the City of Cape Town in March last year after a multi-party disciplinary committee found him guilty on charges related to the illegal demolition of houses.
The council this year recommended that Nkohla be fired for his involvement in the faeces-dumping incidents.
