ANC Youth League President Julius Malema does not have his sights set on Parliament just yet; because "it's for old people".

Malema was nominated by branches of the ANC to represent them in Parliament after the 2009 general elections.

"I am humbled and feel very honoured by the nomination. I thank the branches for showing confidence in me, but I had to decline," said Malema.

When asked when he would be ready to take on a parliamentary position, Malema said lightheartedly: "Not any time soon. I think parliament is for old people, don't you agree? It's not my favourite place."

He said there was still too much work to be done as leader of the youth league.

Malema would continue mobilising young people behind the vision of the ANC.

Malema said perhaps he would reconsider in about 10 to 15 years. At that stage, Malema would be in his late 30s.

The 27-year-old firebrand turns 28 on March 3, but said he was not planning anything special.

"I don't celebrate my birthday. I'm a poor fellow, and I can't afford to throw big parties," said Malema.

He said it would be nice if his friends organised a party for him.
