Outgoing North West premier Popo Simon Molefe is quitting formal politics to give more attention to his "personal health and family", his office said on Thursday.

A statement issued by North West provincial government spokesman Cornelius Tanana Monama said Molefe had already informed the leadership of the African National Congress.

"He indicated that he will explore opportunities in the private sector. However, Molefe will continue to be a loyal and dedicated member of the ANC, and will continue to serve in its structures," Monama said.

Molefe has served two terms as provincial premier and is not eligible for reappointment.
