Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's report on special ministerial adviser Paul Ngobeni has vindicated Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, her office said on Wednesday.

The ministry also called for a public apology by Democratic Alliance MP David Maynier for his “defamation” remarks, it said in a statement.

Maynier had lodged a complaint with the protector, claiming Ngobeni’s appointment as special adviser in the defence ministry was irregular.

Madonsela released her report on her investigation on Tuesday. The final report found Ngobeni was vetted in accordance with the applicable provisions of the law. It concluded there was no substance to Maynier's allegation.

Sisulu had complied with the relevant legislation, regulations, and procedures for processing Ngobeni's appointment. Madonsela said Sisulu was accordingly not responsible for any maladministration.

“The minister welcomes the findings of the Public Protector and calls on Mr David Maynier to apologise to Mr Ngobeni, the minister, and the ministry for his defamation remarks and all the allegations he made in the media about the appointment and process of appointment,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

“The minister notes all other comments in the Public Protector’s report and 1/8notes 3/8 that Mr Ngobeni is not prohibited from practising law in South Africa.” - Sapa
