Protector wants Tongaat housing plan

Cape Town - KwaZulu-Natal officials must devise a plan by the end of August to solve housing problems in Tongaat, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's office said on Thursday.

Madonsela visited Hambanathi residents in Tongaat on Wednesday after meeting housing MEC Ravi Pillay, her spokeswoman Kgalalelo Masibi said.

Community leaders had complained of “cruel and illegal” housing demolitions and evictions.

“The houses were allegedly being demolished because members of the community were erecting their shelters on a piece of land that the municipality has earmarked for development,” Masibi said.

Residents also complained about houses being illegally sold, shoddily-built, bribery, and other related issues.

Madonsela said she would assign a team currently investigating the RDP housing programme nationally, to verify allegations of corruption.

Ethekwini municipality officials and the provincial human settlements department would be responsible for compiling and submitting the housing plan.
