Silvertown residents in Port Elizabeth embarked on a service delivery protest on Saturday ahead of a Youth Day event due to be attended by Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane, SABC radio reported.

The residents were protesting over housing issues and had reportedly burnt tyres next to the Wolfson stadium, where Chabane was scheduled to speak at 10am.

Initially, President Jacob Zuma was to speak at the stadium but pulled out to attend the G20 meeting in Mexico, which starts on Monday.

Chabane was to replace him.

Chabane's spokesman Herold Moloka could not immediately be reached for comment, and it was unclear if Chabane was at the stadium. - Sapa
