Parliament, Cape Town – Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa declared personal wealth worth well over R110 million, Parliament’s 2015 Register of Members’ Interests showed on Thursday.
The registry lists Ramaphosa’s shares in six companies, including Ntaba Nyoni Estates (shares worth R90mln), Ntaba Nyoni Feedlot (R6 mln), Rail-to-Rail (R8.6 mln), Connaught Plc (R3.5 mln), and Mondi Ltd (R2.2 mln)
In addition to the shares, the deputy president owns 31 townhouses in Johannesburg, seven of which are retirement homes, and two flats in Cape Town.
Among the gifts he declared was a “Supreme nurturer Stone in a black leather string”, a gift from the mayor of Bandung in Indonesia, which according to online explanations “helps one to accept responsibility, and to increase the attribute of patience”.
He also received a sleeveless jacket from the SADC (Southern African Development Community) Mission Office in Lesotho, a few bottles of red wine, and a box of nougat.
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters holds a few thousand shares from, among others Media 24, Multi Choice, and Sasol Inzalo. The value of the shares is not listed.
Her gifts include a handbag from Buscor, which she kept after receiving permission from President Jacob Zuma, a bicycle from the City of Polokwane, and a chess board set from the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene received a Mont Blanc Quartz watch in stainless steel. While the value is listed as unknown, Mont Blanc watches can sell for tens of thousands of rand.
Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Mulder holds shares in 12 companies, including Anglo America Plc, Anglogold Ashanti Ltd, Gold Fields and Britsh American Tobacco, with the value not listed.
Mulder lists several gifts, including biltong hampers and wine.
Economic Freedom Fighters’ leader Julius Malema only declared one gift – A bottle of wine worth about R90 from the Stellenbosch University. The firebrand policitican made zero disclosures in the property column, but listed he had shares and other financial interests in the Ratanang Family Trust, Kopano Charity Trust, Mazimbu Investment Trust, and Munzhedzi Family Trust. He did not say how much the shares were worth.
Local government and traditional affairs minister Pravin Gordhan has shares and financial interests in 33 companies , including 170 shares worth R308 140 in Naspers.
