Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma has shuffled his cabinet for the fifth time in his presidency to fill the vacancy created by the death in March of Collins Chabane.

Ngoako Ramathlodi has been moved from mineral resources to become Minister of Public Service and Administration and Free State MP Mosebenzi Joseph Zwane appointed in his place.

Zwane has previously served as an MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, as well as Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the Free State provincial government.

Zuma thanked Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa for filling Chabane’s shoes following his death in a car accident that also claimed the lives of his two bodyguards.

Mthethwa oversaw the finalisation of the public sector wage negotiations during this time.

Ramathlodi has been minister of Mineral Resources since last year, having previously served on the Judicial Service Commission, and has had a difficult tenure as the mining sector struggled with plunging global demand and potential job cuts.

He came in for fierce criticism from some quarters over a move to withdraw the licence of coal miner Glencore over its intention to retrench workers.

Zuma reshuffled his cabinet four times in his first term and also performed a major shake-up when he took office for his second term.

Zuma said in a statement Zwane would be sworn in tomorrow at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

He wished Zwane and Ramathlodi well in their new portfolios.
