Durban - National Freedom Party leader Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi’s public appearance, has brought relief for party leaders who feared her absence would have a devastating effect on its campaign for the local government elections.

This weekend kaMagwaza-Msibi was at the party’s stronghold, Ulundi, where thousands of NFP supporters painted the town orange.

Party general secretary and MP Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa said kaMagwaza-Msibi had recovered.

“The doctors have indicated that soon, at the opportune moment, they will tell her that she is ready to fully return to work.”

The NFP leader also met the national executive committee at the end of last month, he said.

Prof Khubisa said on Saturday kaMagwaza-Msibi went to check her name on the voters’ roll.

“She has also directed the NEC to organise a big rally which will be in June this year. We are grateful to all people of goodwill who have been praying for her,” he said.

KaMagwaza-Msibi fell ill in Ulundi in November and later collapsed at her Newcastle home, and suffered a severe stroke. Khubisa said their campaign was going at full steam and the return of the leader was important as “she is the face of the NFP”.

“The people know her as a leader who prioritises service delivery and development...(her return) will help the party to win many votes,” he said.
