South Africans must respect the outcome of the general elections and continue to cherish democracy, AgangSA leader Mamphela Ramphele said on Friday.
“We are obviously disappointed that we have not done as well as we would have liked but we are proud that in just months we have begun a political party from nothing and gained representation in Parliament,” she said in a statement.
In provisional national election results, AgangSA secured 52 224 votes, or 0.28 percent, with counting at 99.96 percent. The party looked to be on track to get one seat in the National Assembly.
Ramphele said her party had learnt from the elections process and would work “harder and smarter” to win over voters.
“Everything that we stood for must still be fought for, now and in the future... “
She said it was important to attract young people to politics, as many were disillusioned with the status quo.
