Johannesburg - International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane arrived in Austria on Monday for an international conference on nuclear security, her department said.

The conference in Vienna was expected to adopt a declaration emphasising the central role played by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in strengthening the nuclear security framework globally, the department said in a statement.

Responsibility for nuclear security rested with the individual member states and the IAEA would lead co-ordination of international activities in nuclear security, it said.

“South Africa commends the IAEA for the assistance it has provided for our nuclear security efforts. South Africa is the only African country that operates a nuclear power plant, Koeberg,” the department said.

“The IAEA supports South Africa to maintain a high level of security of its nuclear facilities, nuclear and radioactive materials.”

The conference was organised by the IAEA and would continue until July 3. - Sapa
