Johannesburg -South Africans should find a win-win solution in situations where differences about cultural heritage and recognition develop in communities, the Freedom Front Plus said on Monday.
“Room should be made for Tshwane and Pretoria, Tlokwe and Potchefstroom, Freedom Park and the Voortrekker Monument,” FFPlus leader Pieter Mulder said in a statement.
“The current approach, where the heritage of a community should constantly make way for another community, does not solve problems but creates new ones,” he said.
Countries like Brussels, Belgium and Switzerland had a win-win solution that made place for everyone in the country.
Mulder said a proposal to remove the English and Afrikaans sections of the national anthem would lead to further disruption of relationships.
Heritage Day had been established as an opportunity to recognise the rich variety of cultures and heritages in South Africa, he said.
“If the day is celebrated in the right manner, it will lead to greater respect and understanding of each other.”
Mulder said Heritage Day would ensure that the diversity of South Africa would be a positive asset and not a burden or a source of conflict.
