Key indicators of democracy have slipped since 2008 according to the latest South Africa Survey, the SA Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) said on Monday.
The survey, which is based on assessment of three international indexes, found that civil liberties had decreased, researcher Georgina Alexander said in a statement.
The indicators of corruption control and the government's ability to provide quality public services were also cause for concern.
The World Bank Governance Indicator Report found that South Africa had improved in the areas of political stability and the rule of law.
However, in the categories of government effectiveness and voice and accountability, South Africa had slipped from the previous report of 2008.
The Rainbow Index, which was developed by the SAIRR, found a six percent decline in individual rights and responsibilities.
Alexander said the falling scores could be attributed to issues such as media freedom and accountability of public officials.
“Proposed legislation such as the Protection of State Information Bill passed by the National Assembly may adversely affect South Africa’s democracy rankings in the future,” she said. - Sapa

But we will simply sit here while we get shackled and only start to complain once its to late to change anything. When will people learn that as long as the ANC hold power we are on a one way street to communist dictatorial rule.

These surveys make no sense. How can you have improvements in the rule of law and still be riddled with corruption and government effectiveness.

We don't really have a functioning democracy. With the ANC having such a majority in Parliament - and with subservient members in the house - they can push through virtually any law they like. In a few years they won't even be playing lip service to democracy and we will be under a dictatorship

Democracy slipping? What democracy are you talking about? We have enshrined racist laws (BEE) which is all about "Black" self enrichment. I think it would be better put, if you called it Dictator tendencies growing! Corruption rules here!

The next interesting survey should be how much damage the idiot Malema and Co has caused our fragile economy. And I sincerely mean this. And this while our President stood idely by, being ridiculed by this bloody clown. Not to mention the racist damage he has caused even amongst liberal people. That he was allowed to go this far is bloody ridiculous. It is astonishing and sure makes S.A. the laughing stock of the world. Just to think no one had the guts to stand up to this little pri**. If I was that BBC journo, believe me, fat boy would have left the building via a window. He is pure racist filth. And I really do not mean to harp. But the damage he has caused will take a loooong time to abate. Useless swine.

Since the advent of the Zuma regime in March 2009 there has been a distinct decrease in accountability by South Africa's rulers and most South African know full well that the introduction of the Information secrecy Bill in order for the ANC led government will be able to hide its rampant corruption which is undoubtedly the worse in Africa. Ironically the charge of the Information secrecy brigade to parliment and its successful passing by the ANC eas led by ANC member of parliment who led similar brigades AS a member of parliment in PW Botha's apartheid regime. He for sure cannot be trusted. What these silly ANC idiots dont seem to understand is the world of social networking so ANC corruption will always be exposed.

This news? Really? I wonder how much this exercise cost. I could have told you this blindfolded, tied to a tree. And, no, I am not negative;just bloody disgusted and dissapointed at what has happened to this beautiful country and also effing tired of being blamed and having to apologise for being white. What a shambles. And yes, I can 'pack for Perth' and yes we have off shore nest's - blah, blah, blah. Is that the sollution? To put 70 people on the street? Twenty years into democracy? Can SOMEONE stand up to this Government in a civil manner and make things work? Does the Government want things to work? Do they really care for the people who continually vote them into power? Just asking...............
