Johannesburg - SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande on Thursday called for a summit to analyse local and international media.

“Sometime I am taken as if I criticise the media. I am not... I analyse it,” Nzimande told delegates at the National Union of Mineworkers central executive committee meeting in Johannesburg.

“There is a need to convene a left-wing summit on examining local and international media.”

NUM general secretary Frans Baleni told delegates there had been not a single media report on the plight of widows of mineworkers killed at Marikana, near Rustenburg in the North West in August 2012.

The widows were introduced to delegates on Wednesday.

Nzimande lambasted the media.

“The media needs demagogues to sell newspapers, while demagogues need media to further their interests.

“It is very sad that the few progressive journalists are drowned by all this. It is very sad,” he said.
