Johannesburg - Former surgeon-general Lt-Gen Vejay Ramlakan might go on early retirement following an SA National Defence Force (SANDF) probe into President Jacob Zuma's home in Nkandla, Beeld reported on Thursday.

The team probing the military aspect of Nkandla - such as the military clinic, helicopter landing pad and military quarters within the property's perimeter - had tried to establish which financial authorisations were used for the upgrades.

Ramlakan allegedly went ahead with this side of the project without being delegated to do so.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has questioned why these facilities were within the perimeter of the home.

Written questions to Ramlakan's office this week were not answered and his staff said he was on stress leave, the newspaper reported.

His brother, Shanilnand Indurjith, commanding Sergeant Major at the SA Military Health unit in Durban, was killed on October 28.

Defence spokesman Siphiwe Dlamini said it had not been possible for the SANDF to investigate the Nkandla issue properly, partly because Ramlakan had refused to testify.

Dlamini said Ramlakan could be offered early retirement. Beeld reported that Ramlakan had to give reasons why he should not go early.

The head of the investigation is Lt-Gen Vusi Madondo.

According to Dlamini: “He will compile a report breaking down the problems getting witnesses. This will then be given to (SANDF head Solly) Shoke and the minister of defence.”
