johannesburg - About 1000 people from Bramfischerville in Soweto staged a service delivery protest on Wednesday, police said.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said residents wanted street lights, tarred roads and sports facilities for their children.

“They also complained about blocked drains and long grass in open areas that was posing a danger to them.”

A representative from the mayor's office arrived in the area around 1pm to collect a memorandum from protesters. The mayor was given 14 days to respond.

At 2pm the area was calm and there was a strong police presence.

“No people were arrested or injured and nothing has been damaged,” Makhubela said. - Sapa
