Port Elizabeth - ANC members and leaders must stop leaking information about confidential discussions at meetings to the media, its Eastern Cape branch said on Monday.

This affected the ANC's credibility and did not help the people who leaked the information either, provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle said in a statement during a four-day provincial lekgotla.

“All comrades deployed by the ANC must refrain from unnecessary public spats but show leadership work together to address any issue,” he said.

The ANC had to work “hard and smart” to make sure service delivery backlogs were urgently addressed.

Provincial treasurer Thandiswa Marawu told the Dispatch Online that ANC members in several Eastern Cape municipalities would soon be “redeployed”.

He said the lekgotla had accepted recommendations to “redeploy comrades” in municipalities where political infighting was compromising service delivery.

“Service delivery is often compromised, not necessarily because there’s no budget, but due to infighting. By the end of March we want to solve those problems.”

Marawu mentioned Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela as among the “hotspot” municipalities. Others were Mnquma in Butterworth, Mbashe in Dutywa, King Sabata Dalindyebo in Mthatha, Mbizana and Port St Johns.

Masualle said the under-expenditure of government budgets, especially of the municipal infrastructure grant, had been raised as a critical issue and something which the party would not tolerate.

“The ANC remains committed to serving the people of the Eastern Cape and time for numerous meetings is over because we can't meet all the time. It is now time for government to deliver on the agreed programmes,” he said.

The party would no longer tolerate members who prioritised personal interests at the expense of the poor. - Sapa
