Cape Town - Supporters of the Democratic Alliance said they were happy to brave Cape Town's cold weather on Tuesday for an opportunity to hear their new party leader Mmusi Maimane speak in Mitchells Plain.

"The rain won't stop us. We are here to support Maimane," said resident Francis Manuel.

Another resident, Jasmiene van die Kerk, said: "I hope he will talk about the future and about dealing with poverty."

A group of ladies, huddled together against a vibracrete wall for shelter as they waited for Maimane, said that matters such as poverty, unemployment, crime, a lack of visible policing and lack of opportunities were their main concerns, which they hoped the DA would deliver on under Maimane's leadership.

"I also want him to deal with equal opportunities. Us coloureds do not have the same opportunities, especially our children," said another resident Amina Jamodien.

"Even when our children have degrees, they can't get jobs," she said.

But despite the socioeconomic challenges, the rain and cold, the group of women joined the rest of the Mitchells Plain DA supporters in jovial song and dance awaiting Maimane's arrival.
