Large crowds gathered in the Johannesburg CBD on Sunday, at what used be the old ANC offices in the 1950s, to mark the start of the party's centenary celebrations.
Party supporters from various regions donning their gold, green and black regalia, danced and sang along to struggle songs blurring out from a huge white truck parked in front of Macosa House on Commissioner street. Gauteng ANC chairman Paul Mashatile stood on stage alongside some ANC veterans including Ahmed Kathrada, to officially launch the party's centenary celebrations which would go on until the end of 2012.
Addressing the crowd, Kathadra said Macosa House represented commitment, loyalty and hard work. He spoke on the importance of re-instilling volunteering in ANC members, and that they should not focus on receiving payment for doing work for the party.
“Remember the spirit of volunteering... it has to come back,” he said to a cheering crowd before shouting “long live the ANC”.
The group started moving to the provincial offices of the ANC (Walter Sisulu House) just after Mashatile addressed them about the programme for the day. They were led by about 20 roaring bikers.
From there, they would proceed to Mary Fitzgerald Square where a carnival would take place.
More buses were arriving in Johannesburg to join in the celebrations.
Celebrations would continue in January in Mangaung in Bloemfontein, where the ANC was born in 1912. - Sapa
