Cape Town - The terms of reference for a team probing the alleged selling of teachers' posts has been finalised, the basic education department said on Friday.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga would announce the names of the task team members to probe a jobs-for-cash scandal once the proposed list had been gazetted, it said in a statement.
Motshekga set up the task team after news reports that the department and trade union officials were selling jobs.
“The task team will consist of six members, including the chairperson,” the department said.
“The task team will include a lawyer, an independent education expert, a representative from the public service commission, a representative from the justice department, and a representative from the department of basic education.”
It would be chaired by an independent expert in the field of education.
The terms of reference would include probing media reports regarding the alleged irregular appointment of teachers at schools.
The team would have to look into the role played by trade union members, provincial education department officials, members of school governing bodies, and any other individuals.
The inquiry would focus on whether legislative changes needed to be made with regard to the advertising and filling of posts in provinces.
If criminality was found, this should be reported to the police, the department said.
The task team would have 120 days to complete its work.
