Rustenburg - The ANC, the DA and the IFP all retained their wards in the nine by-elections contested in five provinces, the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa said on Thursday.

“Voter turnout varied between 26.36 percent and 53.5 percent with an average of 38.93 percent. Two wards were uncontested,” spokesperson Kate Bapela said in a statement.

In the Free State, the ANC's Khehla Antony Sibeko will be the new councillor in ward 4 in the Phumelela [Vrede] municipality. The ward was uncontested, so no voting took place. Sanna Mthimkhulu of the ANC won ward 1 in the Ngwathe [Parys] municipality with 55.05 percent. In KwaZulu-Natal, Wiseman Mncedisi Khumalo of the ANC won ward 10 with 94,30 percent.

In North West, Nnuki Robert Tseke of the ANC was not contested in ward 28 in the Moretele [Makapanstad] municipality. The ward became vacant when Sello Lehari resigned as a councillor and sworn in as a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) in North West.

The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance were Glenda Christina Mackelina in the Eastern Cape, who won ward 5 in the Camdeboo [Graaff-Reinet] municipality with 59.17 percent of the 2 904 votes cast. In Gauteng, Phillip Andries Nel won ward 42 in the Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] with 96.38 percent of the 13,673 votes cast. Cheryl Phillips won ward 16 in the Rustenburg municipality in the North West province with 89.39 percent.

The new councillors for the Inkatha Freedom Party are Sizwe Emmanuel Mbhele in Ward 10 in the Indaka [Waaihoek] municipality and Nestar Bukwani Namana in Ward 15 in the Abaqulusi [Vryheid] municipality, both in KwaZulu-Natal.
