Durban – The National Freedom Party’s treasurer who failed to pay the party’s registration fees which resulted in it being unable to participate in the recent local government elections will face a disciplinary on Saturday.

The only problem though, according to acting national chairman Bheki Gumbi, is that nobody knows where treasurer Xolani Ndlovu is currently.

Ndlovu has been blamed for the blunder that saw the party, which in 2011 picked up 2.4 percent of the vote, only being able to contest in the lone municipality of Nqutu during the local government elections held on August 3.

The disciplinary is set to be held in Newcastle. Gumbi did not say specifically which charges Ndlovu faced, but confirmed that one of them was a case of bringing the party into disrepute.

Acting deputy secretary general Thulisile Nhlebela said that no money had been taken by Ndlovu.

The party’s secretary general Professor Nhlanhla Khubisa and chairman Maliyakhe Shelembe were suspended early in July and have since resigned.

Gumbi said that he believed that despite not participating in the elections, the party would recover and come back in the 2019 national elections.

He said that if the results in the Nquthu municipality were any indication, then there was a place for the party in South Africa.

“We are not out. As we speak we are in parliament. We never contested all wards in Nquthu, we only contested 50 percent, but we made our mark. If you can times that, we were intending to contest in South Africa we were going to get more than one million votes.”

He said that the party would use the positions it holds in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature, as well as the national legislature, to recover from the recent local government elections debacle.
