Parliament - The government could make the announcement on whether there will be fee increases at universities during the tabling of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement in October.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan will table the MTBPS to indicate priority spending in government.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe on Monday told the media in a post-Cabinet briefing that a decision on fee increases will be taken in the next few months.

Students at universities have been piling pressure on government not to allow fee increases next year.

President Jacob Zuma said last year there will be no fee increases in 2016, and that government had to find billions in cash to plug the gap.

Radebe said at this stage there was no indication how much will be needed.

He said the MTBPS and moving towards the Budget in February next year would give an indication on how much will go into each higher education.

He said the two events will also determine if there will be no fee increases in 2017.

The government has also been under pressure to halt any fee increases.

Radebe said at this stage there was also an inquiry set up by Zuma to investigate the feasibility of fees at universities.

The inquiry has asked Zuma to extend its deadline to June next year to complete its work.
