Johannesburg - Suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has yet to receive a forensic audit report in which he is accused of a number of maladministration allegations.

Cosatu announced to the media on February 11 that a report by Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo (SNG) had been finalised.

However, letters from SNG to Vavi clearly state that the report is still a draft. Vavi maintains the report cannot have been finalised because the parties agreed he would be afforded the opportunity to give his reaction to the findings first. This has not happened.

Vavi has now released copies of correspondence between him and SNG, which he believes exposes an ongoing campaign by Cosatu to publicly smear him and subject him to a trial by media.

The report has not been made public, but it was discussed at a special Cosatu central executive committee meeting earlier this month.

The investigation found irregularities regarding the sale and purchase of Cosatu headquarters, a conflict of interess linked to the employment of Vavi’s step-daughter, and a conflict of interests concerning a business partnership between a company and Vavi’s wife.

Cosatu is seeking legal advice. Vavi is demanding that corrective action be taken by SNG.

Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven could not be reached for comment.
