Veteran politician diesComment on this story
Cape Town -
Veteran politician Japie Basson, who was ejected from the National Party by apartheid architect Hendrik Verwoerd, died in Cape Town on Wednesday, his family said.
He was 94 years old.
Basson joined and left several political parties during his career in politics, said family spokesman Ben de Kok.
“He never changed his mind. He left parties because they changed theirs,” de Kok said.
The family said former prime minister Verwoerd expelled Basson from the NP because of his opposition to apartheid.
Basson published several books toward the end of his life which dealt with the past 60 years of South Africa's political history.
He is survived by his wife Clare, and two daughters, Caro Wiese and Esther Mouton. - Sapa
