The ANC and the DA won one ward each in the municipal by-elections held on Wednesday, according to results released by the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC).
African National Congress candidate Bereng Mokoena scooped Ward 9 in Dihlabeng in the Free State, while Democratic Alliance candidate Basil Mark Douglas took Ward 68 in Johannesburg.
Mokoena won by nine extra votes with a total of 675 votes, while DA member Barend Venter scooped 666 votes.
A total of 1476 votes had been cast in Ward 9.
In Johannesburg, Douglas scooped 3 703 votes, defeating ANC rival Anthony Peter Francis with 3 315 votes.
Independent candidate Patrick Jafta secured 87 votes, while African Independent Congress member Wenderline Alicia Manuel took last place with 42 votes.
A total of 7270 votes had been cast in Ward 68. - Sapa
