Voting for two key positions in the top five leadership structure of the Northern Cape ANC started on Friday morning.

Northern Cape ANC chairman John Block was challenged by deputy mineral resources minister Godfrey Oliphant on Thursday night, the independent Elexions Agency said.

The agency was managing the election process. About 800 ANC delegates were gathered in Upington for the Northern Cape ANC elective conference.

There were more than 530 voting delegates at the conference.

The other position contested was that of provincial secretary, between the current secretary Zamani Saul and Archie Lucas, a former MEC for education in the Northern Cape.

Provincial ANC deputy chairman Kenny Mmoiemang, deputy secretary Alvin Botes and provincial treasurer Yolanda Botha were re-nominated unopposed.

No nominations were received from the floor.

Nominations and elections for additional posts on the party's leadership structure will be held on Saturday.

The results of the voting for the two posts were expected by Friday afternoon.

The second day of the conference started without incident except for an accommodation hiccup for delegates of the Pixley ka Seme region (formerly De Aar).

It appeared that many voting delegates from the region were forced to sleep in tents, while non-voting delegates occupied their accommodation.

Saul told the delegates that the problem would be resolved. – Sapa
