Johannesburg - Gauteng would have the best story to tell if the Democratic Alliance won the province in the upcoming general elections, the party said on Wednesday.

“It is my commitment that if elected in 2014, we will make sure Gauteng has the best story to tell,” Mmusi Maimane said in a statement.

“I want to make Gauteng the best performing provincial government, and exceed the success we have achieved in the Western Cape.”

Maimane is the DA's premier candidate for Gauteng.

The party launched a review of its delivery record in the Western Cape provincial government, titled the 'Western Cape Story'.

The party won the Western Cape in the 1999 general elections.

He said the Presidency's report in 2013 found the Western Cape to be the best performing province in the country.

Among the party's achievements was the province's lowest unemployment rate of 22 percent at the end of 2013, compared with the country's broad unemployment of 36 percent.

“In our first year in government, all 13 Western Cape departments got clean audits,” Maimane said.

The Western Cape had the highest access to water, flush toilets, and electricity.

Seventy-six percent of the Western Cape budget was spent in poor communities, Maimane said.

“The DA is the only party contesting the election in Gauteng with an unsurpassed track record of delivery in government,” he said.
