KwaZulu-Natal - He was the face of Census 2011, appearing on billboards and adverts, leading the way when the enumeration started and sitting in during the long hours of data processing.
Statistician-General Pali Lehohla became known as the man in yellow when he wore his all-yellow outfit – a yellow suit and a yellow Census T-shirt – at a presentation of the results to politicians at Mangaung on December 18 last year.
“I had to drive the census and I became known as the person who was the face of the census,” Lehohla said.
He first appeared in the suit in January 2011, and he wore it through the preparations, the enumeration process and until November when the countdown to the release of the results started.
“I retired it … when I presented the results in Mangaung I retired it for good,” Lehohla said.
“There were six suits,” he said, two of which he gave away.
One was given to an enumerator from the Free State and another to someone at the presentation of the results, who had been so impressed with the work of the team that he asked for the suit.
Of the four left, Lehohla said: “I will keep one for myself; the others will go into the museum of Statistics SA.” - The Mercury
