Minister in the presidency Colins Chabane.

Minister in the presidency Colins Chabane welcomed delegates to the 17th World Festival of Youth and Students which began in Tshwane on Monday.

“Thousands of young people attending the festival will have an opportunity to interact and discuss social, political and economic issues towards the development of young people,” he said in a statement.

The festival, to be held under the theme “Let's Defeat Imperialism”, hosted by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) in partnership with the World Federation of Democratic Youth, was scheduled to end on December 21.

Thousands of international and domestic delegates were expected at the event, for which R69-million had been budgeted. Of this amount R40 million had come from the National Lotteries Board.

Speakers listed on the agenda range from Kgalema Motlanthe, Winnie Mandela and Julius Malema to Jackie Selebi.

“Thus far over 100 countries amounting to over 3000 delegates had began to arrive in South Africa in preparation for the festival.”

President Jacob Zuma was expected to speak at the opening ceremony.

Chabane said delegates would get an opportunity to discuss issues such as employment, economic issues, environment and development, education, science, culture and information, democratic rights and the struggle against imperialism. - Sapa

After this Christmas party (in the name of Youth Festival) that's being thrown to the youth of South Africa, then what? Well, giving benefit of doubt, I wish the outcomes from the festival will have a proper implementation plan, rather than seeing the same youth leading the same lives, post 2010. Good luck to the youngsters who will be gathering in Tshwane, socialising.

R40 million from NLB that should have funded shelters for the homeless: Speakers that include convicted criminals: participants from bastians of freedom and democracy that includes Zanu PF, North Korea, and the disgusting Malema. What an absolute disgrace and waste of money.

It's funny how Malema loves to roast "imperialist" Americans and yet he attempts to emulate them by driving expensive cars; living in a mansion and drinking Johnny Walker Blue.

I still believe this to be a ridiculous waste of money which could have been much better used in so many other areas of importance. But, once again, let us SEE what comes of this; because once all the rhetoric of Malema and Co has happenned, whats the bet thousands of youngsters will STILL crawl back into a shack totally dissilusioned. Too much talk and too little action. Very similar to ZANU PF rallies. Disgusting indulgence, but PLEASE IOL keep us posted with whatever positive comes out of this. I for one, will not be holding my breath. Same old k*k; different day.......
