DA leader Helen Zille has accused HIV/Aids activists of acting like an “Aids Gestapo”, a report has said.
According to the Cape Times, Zille wrote in her weekly newsletter on Sunday that human rights activists were selective in the rights they chose to promote and, while claiming to own the moral high ground, “they hunt in a vicious pack” to prevent anyone questioning their assumptions.
Zille said “slacktivists” was too gentle a term for such activists. Instead, she called them “Aids Gestapo”, the report said.
Asked who specifically the “Aids Gestapo” was, Zille reportedly said: “I am not going to personalise it by naming names. If I do that, it will merely end up as a wrangle and the points I am making will get lost.”
Recently Zille has come under fire for her “Get Tested to Win” campaign offering cash prizes to people who take an HIV/Aids test.
She has defended the draw, saying it will ultimately help reduce the number of new infections in the province.
She said Francois Venter, deputy executive director of the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute and outgoing president of the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, had “succumbed” to the logic of the “Aids Gestapo”.
Venter has criticised Zille for calling for murder charges against those who knowingly infect their partners with HIV, although he supports her “lucky draw” campaign.
“If you can’t beat them, join them,” Zille wrote in her newsletter. “(Venter) seems to be finding the ultimate cop-out to avoid the debate on behaviour change and reinforcing denialism.”
Zille quoted Nelson Mandela, who said at a 1992 meeting, before he became president that the ANC would face the Aids issue uncompromisingly.
She said she could find no other example where Mandela had explicitly addressed the issue.
“During his presidency he seems to have paid scant attention to Aids. I have often wondered whether the Aids Gestapo managed to silence him, too.”
In her newsletter, Zille wrote about a scenario in which a woman in a committed relationship became infected with HIV because her partner chose to remain silent about his status.
“If she lays a charge or sues for the violation of her physical integrity, she will be accused of ‘stigmatising HIV’, ‘driving the pandemic underground’ and ‘violating’ her partner’s ‘right to privacy’. In short, unless she meekly accepts her situation, she is a villain.
“This is a consequence of the ‘progressive’ line on HIV/Aids, touted by people who actually have much in common with religious fanatics or fascists. In their blinkered focus on a free-floating single issue, they lose sight of the broader public good.”
Zille cited a pending high court case in which a top Durban businessman was being sued for R2.56 million by a Cape Town woman who alleged he infected her with genital herpes.
It was publicly acceptable for only a white woman to single out a white man for infecting her with a sexually transmitted disease, Zille wrote. “But, not vice versa, according to the Aids Gestapo. Who actually is being racist?”
According to the Cape Times, TAC treasurer Nathan Geffen said on Sunday: “I expect better than this kind of petulant behaviour from Ms Zille.”
Zackie Achmat, TAC founder and now co-director of not for profit trust Ndifuna Ukwazi, was quoted as saying: “It is deeply regrettable that Premier Helen Zille is copying the worst of Thabo Mbeki in trying to play the leader of all portfolios in her party.
“And that like Thabo Mbeki, the premier finds it anathema that any human being should stand up to her or that civil society should stand up to her. She calls TAC the Aids Gestapo hunting in a vicious pack – that is no different from Julius Malema. And more important, like Thabo Mbeki projecting racialism on to everyone else by being racist himself, (Zille) projects Gestapo on to everyone while displaying tendencies of authoritarianism herself.” - IOL

That's almost funny coming from a woman who herself is selective in the rights she chooses to promote. But then it's been obvious for years that she has strong authoritarian tendencies. That herpes case is beyond ridiculous. Not only is it possible the man didn't know he had it (assuming he even does) it is impossible for the woman to prove she got it from him even if he does have it. I certainly hope the guy gets some proper medical witnesses in the court to explain how that disease works lest this woman con the court.

Anonymous always attacking helen zille. The Aids Gestapo is alive and well. AIDS is spreading in South Africa are we so stupid that we stick our heads in the sand like ostriches and believe that its a myth. Perhaps people opposed to helen zille's way of thinking should take a cold shower at least she has something to contribute, instead of being negative and bashing someone stand up and DO something. ACTIONS speak LOUDER than words. Shabby Shake supports Helen Zille's Effort... :o)

Shock!!!! My friend who is living with Herpes told me a report from CNN said that the world's largest STD dating and support site STDslove. com which is powered by plenty of fish now has more than 1,100,000 members. Also, more than 80% of members on the site are good looking and sexy. The report also indicated that STD rates soar worldwide and CDC had granted CSU $1.9M for HIV education to lower the rates of HIV transmission.

What is established (the non-Zille system should pick this up) is that the same people get tested more than once. So when it is quoted that n many people have been tested, it may only be a fraction of n.

HZ is starting to sound like a denialist. Although it is good that she has opened this issue for debate, she is being too narrow minded. Activists are against criminalising HIV as much as they promote regular testing and constant use of condoms (some even distribute these to people's homes). We should rather be looking at ways to encourage disclosure, not only in discordant couples, but across the board. In a situation whereby one chooses to trust a partner and also chooses to not use condoms, one should also be able to deal with the consequences. What we need to be talking about now is how do we make people take responsibility for their lives, and how do we encourage regular testing.

@ebbieA...i'm truly sorry for your predicament it appears it was more 'accidental' on your behalf than intentional on the man's behalf...unless of course he knew he had aids or having had sex with numerous partners had never bothered to have a test. in my opinion there is dereliction of duty to maintain your body in a health condition and to ensure that when you have unprotected sex that you are clean before you engage other persons. mistakes happen and that is sad but in todays world there is a duty on everybody to have regular aids test if you are bed hopping and if you are positive then anybody you sleep with has the right to know before hand. 'purposefully' passing on aids to another whether with intent or dereliction of your duty is a serious matter, maybe not murder but it certainly has a name considering the consquences. Zille must be applauded for her stand which in the very least will bring home to some people that they are hiv positive and hopefully they will treat that with the gravity it deserves.

@Blacksmith: Nice one - though Zille is leading boldly. JZ is leading baldly, in more ways than one...

@Kyle V N: To equate an HIV infection to murder is a a very big mistake. The average lifespan of HIV infected persons who are on ARVs is now 24 years after infection. And that number grows larger with each passing year. I am not trying to condone malicious infection by those who are infected, but being infected is automatically a death sentence. An infected HIV person can live for many years without ARVs and have virtually no symptoms to speak of. Various factors come into the equation. ARVs are also no longer the cocktails of drugs they once were. It is now a matter of taking one pill a day and the total cost is about R600 a month. Again, there are various factors to consider. But there are also many ways to avoid infection and people need to start taking responsibility for their own health and not be naive about HIV. You cannot tell by looking at someone and a one night stand has no reason to tell you their status if proper precaution is taken by all. If you choose to have sex without a condom you have chosen to take a risk.

Explanation: This is all a morality issue. Humanity has totally lost it. If an entire government can't guide the country right then we need parental authoritarianism

@EbbieA - Zille isn't thinking of people like you. Yes - you had a responsibility to keep yourself safe and having unprotected sex with someone you have only known for three weeks is downright stupid. She is thinking of people who are responsible, and who have made the decision to stop using condoms because they believe themselves to be in a committed relationship, where there should be no risk of infection, or those who deal with men like "Guy Y" who thinks nothing of removing a condom even after the lady in question insisted on safe sex. In Anonymous' delightful little story Guy Y meats his match in a lady who kept quiet about her status, but what if he was the HIV+ one, and Lady X insisted on the condoms because they are not in a committed relationship? Many HIV+ guys would still remove the condom, careless about the lady in question's future health and her efforts to protect herself. These are the men Zille wants to target. She wants to protect the innocent from the criminally careless...

@EbbieA 10:06. Ebbie, your attitude is positive, and it is what the core of Zille's message is. You are taking responsibility for your foolish behaviour. That is a good thing and will stand you in good stead. However, that does not excuse the man who willingly and knowingly is spreading a decease into our society. He should be prosecuted, and hung, drawn and quartered for what he has done to you.

I agree with Zille. Activists are merely just that whilst Zille is actually getting her hands dirty. I sense a great amount of jealousy as Zille is clearly putting to shame the Gestapo. If they were doing all that they could Zille would not have had to take things into her own hands. That is what leaders do, they lead baldly despite criticism from those who wish that they thought of it first. From those who should have thought of it first as that is what they are paid to do.

Groups like TAC have positioned themselves as the alpha and omega of the country's HIVAIDS discourse. To me it sounds like religion, they are not available for debate, they do not accept suggestions, they do not engage constructively on issues that are raised by other stakeholders, what they say is the "Gospel truth", that is conveniently paid for by our tax money. No-one is raising intellectual challenges to what Zille is saying, it's all name calling and accusations. I challenge TAC to provide peer reviewed evidence which will prove that Zille's initiatives will not contribute towards eradicating the spread of HIV.

AZT IS Destroying South Africa. That is what AIDS means. It is about time this government knew the truth that the leading cause of death on this planet is medication. I suggest that Helen Google 'AIDS scam" and start working towards setting us free from this Illuminati controlled genocide of the blacks.Drugs are dangerous whether pushed or prescribed. AZT was taken off the market because it killed the cancer patients quicker than the cancer. Now it is being offloaded by that evil Rockerfeller foundation onto the developing countries of the world. Please catch a wakeup!

I applaud Zille for standing up for basic human morals!! The activists have lost sight of the bigger picture: the well being and health of our society. In protecting HIV infected individuals from social stigma and shunning, they have given license to infected people to 'share' the affliction of a deadly disease. Our society cannot condone murder.

At least we are openly talking about AIDS, no matter how cranky and obtuse the discourse. Debate was not happening a few years ago. But I must agree with Ms. Zille. Who has a monopoly on the discourse? UNAIDS recently published an update in which it said that gay men were driving the activism on HIV. While it is good to have an organised advance guard, it tells us that their interests are put above everyone elses. Consider this: in most of africa, gays are persona non grata and are penalised by the law, yet the issues driven by the UNAIDS favours gay rights issues but this is not where the bulk of new infections are occurring. Young women are the largest group of new infections but african governments are told that their resources must go into gay at risk groups at the expense of women. If you say this out loud, one is labelled anti-progressive and bigoted anti-gay rights. The discourse has been established and maintained by a minority and we should be challenging it or what is the use of having any grey material in the cranium at all?

Listen it would all be good and well, if these guys were paying for their own ARVs, they would certainly have the rights to go around infecting the whole world if they felt like. Certainly, just like it is a crime to go around destroying public property paid for by tax payers money, it should also be a crime to add unnecessary burden on our already ailing public healthcare.

@andy, The gecko, gerald, et al......you guys are thinking! @anonymous 9:06 ...lady X has a duty to inform her 'partner' from the outset irrespective of the lustiness during sex, she remains responsible for her condition. guy Y will not have entered her knowing her status! this issue has nothing to do with politics, it is about HONESTY, INTEGRITY, FAITHFULNESS - GET IT? andy is spot on with the ngo's protecting their means of income.

As someone who is HIV positive and who was infected by someone who most likely knew they had HIV, I have to say that I do not support Hellen Zille on this issue. I am not angry at the person who infected me, and I do not blame them. Unless a rape occurred, it was my responsibility to take care of my body. I knew the guy for 3 weeks and he seemed nice so I acted foolishly. I did something most people do at one point or another and has sex without a condom. Yes I could blame him, but I didn't take care of myself, so why should he?
