Cape Town - Political parties on Monday welcomed President Jacob Zuma’s decision to axe Cabinet members Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde and Sicelo Shiceka.
Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille also applauded Zuma's announcement that National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele was suspended with immediate effect.
“This announcement is better late than never,” she said in a statement.
Zuma announced in Pretoria that Mahlangu-Nkabinde would be replaced as public works minister, and Shiceka as traditional affairs and co-operative governance minister.
Zuma's government had been beset by controversy for several months. Public Protector Thuli Madonsela had urged Zuma to take strong action against those involved in leases for police office space, as well as Shiceka for his abuse of public money.
Zille said: “We applaud the president for reaffirming his government's commitment to the role of the public protector and other Chapter Nine institutions.”
The ANC said the Cabinet reshuffle would contribute significantly to strengthening government performance and capacity.
“In this regard, the ANC would like to praise and equally endorse the president's action and decisiveness,” spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.
The ANC also welcomed Zuma's announcement that Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Willie Seriti would head the new commission of inquiry into the arms deal.
The IFP, ANCYL, SACP and National Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) applauded Zuma on his decision to reshuffle the Cabinet.
“It is our hope therefore, that today signals a new beginning in which President Zuma will maintain his leadership role, in holding accountable those who underperform or fail our nation,” Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said.
While Nehawu congratulated Zuma on his “firm and decisive action”, it felt he had taken too long to act. - Sapa

I’m hard put to believe that neither Buthelezi nor Zille has criticised the unacceptable condition of Cele’s suspension with full pay. Have they been quoted out of context? Certainly, our President, infamously renowned for deliberate temporising, has at last reacted and Zille’s “Better late than never” isn’t without sardonic sarcasm. The caption to this article thus tends to be misleading; a fact which could contribute towards the President’s re-election. Zuma is a master of subterfuge and strategic manipulation. His choice of an incongruous substitution for Cele also augurs well for the post-election period and, if he will have been successfully re-elected, Cele’s successor will have been found too incompetent and inexperienced for such a challenging position. And the corollary?!...My guess is as good as yours! Pardon my having become overly suspicious. But can you blame me? Remember, Cele has been suspended not fired!

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard President's announcement, he finally turned pages from pg 7 to pg 29..So what's this of suspending Cele instead of firing him just like Nkabinde. uuuhh Cele's lemon face will change to hard lemon face...

Vincent, being legal and not living in sin... is 2 different things. But stealing from the public (tax payers) and getting fired with pay (legally stealing from the public) thats a sin... plus they still want 2 increase tax!!!!

Is that suspended on full pay and privileges. I would also accept it, with a big smile. Full pay for doing even less!

So what about the 30 Billion that was stolen? Will it be recovered or just written off as usual?

Zuma is legally married to his wives. He is not living in sin with them. He is Zulu and his culture allows polygamny. Let us not force our cultures on others. Otherwise I say well done to him for tackling these problems.

Continue in this trend Mr Zuma and see the results of respect from many other democratic nations, South Africa can be a great country, because it has great potential as a leader in Africa both politically and socially. However your personal reputation does not go well with many countries, maybe your successor will continue in your footsteps of weeding out the rest of the corruption.God Blesses you if you are obedient to His word...God only allows one wife...When you depart from this earth oneday and you will...You will meet the God who created man and the world and be judged by HIS WORD the Bible( We hope you believe the Bible)
