Johannesburg -

President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday congratulated Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on being awarded the Unesco/Bilbao Prize for the Promotion of a Culture of Human Rights.

“His Grace the Archbishop has been a tireless and visible ambassador of our country all over the world, promoting human rights and justice,” Zuma said in a statement.

“We extend our sincere congratulations on behalf of government.”

The prize was awarded to Tutu at Unesco's Paris headquarters on Monday.

According to Unesco's website, Tutu was recognised as the laureate of the 2012 Unesco/Bilbao Prize for the Promotion of a Culture of Human Rights for the role he played in building a new and democratic non-racial South Africa.

It also mentioned Tutu's role as chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. - Sapa
