Johannesburg - The African National Congress Women's League in the Eastern Cape announced on Sunday that it wanted President Jacob Zuma to stay on as the ANC leader.

Forty-nine ANCWL Eastern Cape members from various regions of the province took part in nominations for a preferred leader of the ruling party in East London on Friday.

“As the women's league in the province, we believe that we can't restart the national political and developmental gains started five years ago, hence continuity is of paramount importance,” said provincial secretary Nancy Sihlwayi.

She said they believed Zuma had supported women's development.

“Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is the first female chairperson of the African Union and this is an achievement as championed by the leadership of President Jacob Zuma,” said Sihlwayi.

The ANCWL said it could see efforts being made by the government.

“We note several service delivery presidential interventions in different regions of the province... It is a response to the call made to benefit poor woman in the province through creation of employment opportunities.”

The league elected businessman Cyril Ramaphosa for deputy president, Baleka Mbete for chairperson, Gwede Mantashe as secretary-general, and Jesse Duarte as deputy secretary-general.

The provincial executive committee had also elected the same members. - Sapa
