Alice, Eastern Cape -

The ANC in the Eastern Cape on Saturday nominated President Jacob Zuma to lead the party for a second term with businessman Cyril Ramaphosa as his deputy.

Results from the party conference held at the University of Fort Hare from Friday were released in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A report from the party showed that Zuma received 392 votes while his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe got 211 votes.

For the deputy's seat, Ramaphosa received 379 votes compared to the 199 received by Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale.

Delegates voted for incumbent chairwoman of the party, Baleka Mbete to retain her position.

Secretary-General of the ANC, Gwede Mantashe was also nominated for the position he currently holds.

He received 385 votes while Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula trailed behind with 185.

Jessie Duarte was nominated as the party's deputy secretary general and Kwa-Zulu-Natal Premier, Zweli Mkhize was nominated for the post of party treasurer.

“The nomination of these candidates went smooth without interruptions,” said the party's Provincial Secretary Oscar Mabuyane.

“These results indicate that the people of the Eastern Cape have spoken... They have democratically nominated the leadership they want to lead the ANC from the Mangaung conference.”

Delegates at the conference were still to nominate candidates for the positions of the national executive committee. - Sapa
