Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma wished good health and a long life to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on his birthday on Monday.
Zuma wished the Nobel Peace Prize winner a happy 82nd birthday.
“We wish him good health and a long life so that he can continue contributing to nation building and social cohesion, which he continues to do even in retirement,” Zuma said.
“On behalf of government and the people of South Africa, we wish Archbishop Tutu a joyous occasion.”
Earlier, the ANC Youth League also sent birthday wishes.
“We are happy for our grandfather, who has always stood in defence of human rights and equality for all. We wish him a happy birthday full of happiness and joy,” spokesman Bandile Masuku said in a statement.
The SABC reported that a series of events was planned to celebrate the day.
The Desmond Tutu Foundation and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds would clean Lagoon Beach near Milnerton, Cape Town; and former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan was expected deliver the annual Desmond Tutu Peace Lecture in Cape Town.
