Johannesburg – The South African Communist Party will on Sunday celebrate the 105th birthday of Rebecca Kotane, the wife of former SACP general secretary Moses Kotane.

Kotane was an outstanding leader of both the African National Congress and the SACP, which he served as general secretary, the SACP said in a statement. Rebecca Kotane, "a comrade in her own right, is regarded as one of the oldest stalwarts of our movement and 105 years is a great milestone".

SACP 2nd deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila would lead a delegation of the party to MaKotane’s home in Soweto, Johannesburg. Linked with the visit, the SACP Linda Jabane district would host a memorial lecture to honour Moses Kotane, "the chief strategist of the South African revolution", the SACP said.

Moses Kotane suffered a stroke in 1968 and travelled to the former Soviet Union for treatment. He died there on May 19, 1978. He served as SACP general secretary from 1939 until his death in 1978.
