Abortions are performed in South Africa at an average rate of more than 200 a day, according to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.
In a written reply to a parliamentary question on Friday, he said a total of 82 920 abortions were performed across all nine provinces during the period April 2012 to April this year.
More than a quarter of these were in Gauteng (21 794), followed by the Eastern Cape (14 357).
It is understood Motsoaledi's reply refers to abortions performed at public health institutions.
Dividing the total by the number of days in the 13-month period gives an average of 210 abortions a day.
The minister was responding to a question posed by African Christian Democratic Party MP Cheryllyn Dudley, whose party is opposed to abortion. - Sapa
