A man was shot in both arms while fighting off three hijackers who were trying to steal his car late on Thursday.
Two of the robbers were injured.
The attempted hijacking is one in a string of incidents in the past two months in which four people were shot and killed and numerous cars hijacked in driveways.
The police recently announced that a crack hijacking unit had been established to break the back of what they say could be an organised syndicate operating across the city in recent months.
In the latest incident the Constantia man exchanged fire with the hijackers.
Southern Cross Drive in Constantia erupted in gunfire, just after 8pm, when the man, whom police have declined to identify, was arriving home.
Wynberg police spokesperson Inspector Ezra October said the man was about to turn into his driveway when he was approached by three armed men.
As they pointed their guns at him he fired his own gun, wounding one in the chest and another in the leg.
He ended up with two gun shot wounds to his arms. The man fled into his house to get another gun, but when he came out the hijackers had disappeared. His car, a new model Mercedes-Benz, was not taken.
No arrests have been made.
The new police unit will investigate the deaths of five people who were shot during attempted hijackings, as well as the hijacking of scores of cars across the city since the beginning of the year.
In Cape Town; Mitchells Plain, the southern suburbs, Khayelitsha, Philippi, Nyanga and Gugulethu have all been identified as hijacking hotspots.
Last week Christopher Smith, 51, of Woodlands, Mitchells Plain, died after being shot in the chest during an early morning driveway hijacking.
Three men fled the scene in Smith's Golf.
Also in Mitchells Plain two weeks ago Peter Mashonga escaped injury when he was hijacked outside his house.
