Former cabinet minister and National Party member Abe Williams will be released on parole from Cape Town's Pollsmoor Prison on Tuesday.

Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele said on Friday that Williams had been actively involved in the rehabilitation and recreation programmes of prisoners.

He had also become involved in running sports tournaments and was one of the founder members of a project called Friends Against Abuse, which counsels prisoners on the dangers of HIV and Aids.

Nxele said the parole board had taken Williams' good behaviour in prison into account when considering his parole.

"Based on his activities in prison, I have every reason to believe that he is a candidate for parole," Nxele said.

Williams was admitted to Pollsmoor on September 9 last year to serve a three-year sentence after being convicted of fraud.

Nxele said Williams' parole would end on September 8 2003, and until then he would have to report to the community corrections office in Cape Town once a month. - Sapa
