SA Airlink pilot Alistair Freeman died in a Durban hospital this morning.

Freeman, first officer Sonja Bierman and flight attendant Rodelle Oosthuizen crash-landed on the grounds of a Durban school on Heritage Day, seriously injuring Durban Solid Waste street cleaner Abraham Mthethwa.

The plane narrowly avoided crashing into the adjoining Merebank suburb.

"He passed away just after 1am this morning," said spokeswoman for Netcare St Augustine's Hospital, Augusta Dorning.

She said Freeman's family were with him at the time.

First officer Sonja Bierman was recently transferred to a Joburg hospital.

Oosthuizen and Mthethwa were still at St Augustine's Hospital.
