INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

A children's rights lobby group wants spanking to become a criminal offence, the Sunday Times reported.

The Children's Rights Project, based at the University of the Western Cape, made the proposal last month. It has asked the department of social development to ban corporal punishment in homes.

Other children's groups, including the Children's Institute, Childline SA, and the Centre for Child Law, have supported the proposal.

The department is currently considering whether to amend the Children's Act in order to give children more rights.

Department spokeswoman Lumka Oliphant said the issue would be discussed with interested parties, including children's rights campaigners, religious organisations, and traditional leaders, the weekly reported. - Sapa

so the department spokesperson says it will be discussed with various groups EXCEPT no mention of parents groups.Typical. More regulation that we can't enforce and won't work. Spanking is fine as long as there is no abuse. Abuse can be dealt with by the law already. No to the nanny state! We can raise our own children, without government help.

I was spanked as a child, spanked on the butt, not abused..I also recieved a hell of alot off love and attention and support, never hated my parents and loved them with all my heart. My children got spanked and taught manners and sharing and respect, they still do not hate me, are not aggresive by nature as a matter of fact they always stand up for others that are looked down on, so realy what harm did a few spankings do to my kids, except help make them the wonderfull people they are, and that is not just me that thinks they are fantastic but everybody that meets them.

Ok, and what about the average, normal thinking, non-criminally minded citizen who wants to raise hisher child with good fundamental morals, principles and standards.... which would actually lead to a moral and principled next generation in the work force. Some children need a bit of a spanking from time to time. No scales of justice there. Who funds all these child rights movements? Do they know there are also scales tipping to towards the other side or are they blinded by green coloured paper? If I have a child and want to guide it in the right direction and it uses the law against my hand of discipline, only to use the law to hurt someone else in school.... is the law going to tell me to bring up my children properly? How? Can I then make it the government's duty to bring up my child?

"Spare the rod and spoil the child"... Proverbs 13-24. Many South Africans got a good spanking when needed and are perfectly fine and probably living successful lives abroad now,

Totally - lets go the American way, where it's ILLEGAL to spank your kid, tho to mental torture the hell out of them, that's ok... check out the result, almost every single american urban teenager has their own shrink... truly believe often a smack on the butt is so much better than the mental equivalent which can be some much more hectic & insiduous.

A good spanking every now and again does no harm. The children today have no discipline, don't respect their parents or elders and that's why there's so much crime, drugs etc etc out there. A good spanking every now and again will do them no harm and teach them right from wrong. However, there's a difference between a good spanking and beating them up.

I couldn't help but notice the "interested parties" that are going to discuss this with the department. Not one of them actually has anything to do with childrens' best interests. Children's rights campaigners don't even bother speaking to children, let's not talk about religious figures and children, and traditional leaders...well, we know full well all they're good for. Has anyone thought to ask educators, school organisations and parent groups to discuss the matter? You know, since they're the ones actually raising the children. Pain is an object lesson in every higher species on the planet. How are we supposed to teach our children without it?

PLEASE South Africa have a look at the kids in the UK, they are uncontrolable, there is terrible bulying in schools the behavour in the street is terrible. They have NO respect for police and people in general. The parents don't know where to turn. Why is it that they have to have Super Nanny nowadays???? because parents are not allowed to smack their kids. I say NO to abuse, there is a difference between decipline and chastising!! SA have a petition drawn up and get as many to sign sothat parents have rights as well!!

When you spank a child all it means is that your word does not carry as much authority as it used to. so you resort to physical violence to inculcate your ideal of standard morals. Way to go.

Spanking should be used selectively for clear, deliberate misbehavior, especially a child's persistent defiance of a parent. It should be used only when the child receives at least as much praise for good behavior as correction for problem behavior. Verbal correction, time out and logical consequences should be used initially, followed by spanking when noncompliance persists.

The bum and the brain are connected - let the parent decide (so long as it is "spanking" and not thrashing).

I note that investigators of the riots in London last year have suggested a lack of spanking at an early age may have been a contributory factor to the ill discipline demonstrated. There is no doubt in my mind that the 'blanket' reactions to instances of abuse has resulted in the very unpleasant world we know today. As usual, lazy people try to find an easy way of dealing with problems instead of dealing with exceptional matters on an exceptional basis.
